IT Infrastructure Project Management

IT Infrastructure Project Management

IT infrastructure Project Management is the oversight and management of projects related to the construction or developemnt of the IT infrastructure.

The IT infrastructure consists of all elements that support the management and usability of data and information. These include the physical hardware and facilities (including data centers), data storage and retrieval, network systems, legacy interfaces, and software to support the business goals of an enterprise.

The Infrastructure Project Manager (IPM) has some unique responsibilities when it comes to managing infrastructure-specific projects, such as upgrades, integrations, and repairs. Infrastructure project management involves many of the general project management elements like planning, execution, monitoring, testing, and project closure. However, it is also highly technical: all projects are associated with maintaining the continual operation of the IT infrastructure. IPMs commonly have a variety of ongoing projects without defined end dates, whereas traditional PMs work on discrete projects with a final due date.

Infrastructure projects are not just about developing new infrastructure. They are also about maintaining current infrastructure, deciding when to replace infrastructure, and even about moving to the cloud. For example, when wireless networks were starting to be installed almost a decade ago, this was seen as totally new infrastructure, and it was not clear whether they would replace or augment wired networks. Universities that installed wireless networks then had to maintain them, fixing anything that broke and upgrading network wiring and routers that connected those access points. These maintenance projects were sometimes very large infrastructure projects in themselves.

This life cycle of build-maintain-upgrade-replace-reimplement results in the different types of infrastructure projects. The factors to be analyzed for each type of project are similar, but different types of projects require different levels of justification, with each type addressing capabilities, benefits, risks, and costs in its own way.

The Infrastructure project manager will provide direction, guidance and organization on new IT infrastructure project initiatives. The role requires an understanding of all cross channel (direct, retail) and corporate IT business functions; focused on Network, Data Center, Shared Services, Telephony and end point implementations and related systems. The Infrastructure project manager should possess knowledge of Infrastructure operations, service delivery and support, help desk and related services.

The IPM will manage the project work and project budget acting on variances from the plan as well as bringing the projects to closure (including decommissioning of legacy infrastructure), documenting project execution by creating a body of knowledge, and suggesting process improvements for future projects.

Network Hardware Installation

Vetcore Technology & Electrical Services provides a complete “end to end” network design, installation, and provisioning service from the initial site survey & performance requirement determination, through cabling installation, network infrastructure hardware installation & configuration, server & client PC installation, client software & applications software installation, to the final commissioning, testing and documentation of the completed network installation.

Site Survey

A cabling engineer will attend site and document the physical and environmental characteristics of the site and establish the network performance and cabling installation requirements.

Network Design

Network topology & infrastructure hardware are specified to meet agreed performance and environmental requirements.

Network Cabling Installation

Install structured cabling systems for data, voice, and video as required.

Network Infrastructure Hardware Installation

Patch Panels, Hubs, Switches & Routers, supplied, installed configured to meet operational requirements.

Server Installation & Client PC Installation

Server Hardware and Server Software installed and configured as per agreed requirements. Client Applications Software installed as per standard install procedures, customised to particular requirements.

Provisioning

Network provisioning is an increasingly common practice among businesses and focuses on ensuring that only certain users have access to a system. The process starts when initially starting the network and authorizing users for specific devices and servers. Provisioning typically focuses on security and connectivity.

Installation Hand-over

Once the installation has been completed to the customer’s satisfaction, the documentation is handed over and the necessary support agreements put into place.
